‘Causation in Insurance’ Seminar

‘Causation in Insurance’ seminar jointly organised by Dr. Nüsret-Semahat Arsel International Business Law Implementation and Research Center (NASAMER) and Turkish Insurance Law Association (TILA) was held at Koç University Anatolian Civilizations Center (ANAMED) on 28 March 2018. Causation between the risk and the loss is a salient issue in insurance law and practice which pertains to the claim process and is therefore highly topical in several jurisdictions. This one day seminar therefore sought to approach this topic from the perspectives of private and insurance law, comparing Turkish law principles and case law to their common law counterparts. The speakers of the event included Gregory Pynt (Barrister, Francis Burt Chambers, Australia) who gave an overview of causation in the Australian insurance law context; Gökçe Kurtulan (Research Assistant, Bilgi University) who spoke on causation from the perspective of private law; and Dr. Ayşegül Buğra who approached insurance law causation from the angles of Turkish and English laws. The seminar was moderated by Prof. Samim Ünan, Vice-President of TILA and Presidential Council Member of the International Insurance Law Association (AIDA). The speakers’ papers are published in the seminar book entitled ‘Causation in Insurance’.
