Conference Content: The conference on “Current Legal Problems Regarding the Suretyship Contract”, organized with the collaboration of Koç University College of Law and Nüsret-Semahat Arsel International Business Law Implementation and Research Center, took place on September 27th, 2012. The objective of the conference was to evaluate and to elaborate on the novelties concerning the suretyship contract brought by the Turkish Code of Obligations, which entered into force as of July 1st, 2012. The conference was divided into two sessions, the first one of which was chaired by Prof. Dr. Cumhur Özakman. The first session was comprised of presentations by Prof. Dr. Baki İlkay Engin and Prof. Dr. Abdülkadir Arpacı, who dealt with provisions concerning the requirements for validity and their scope of application; and the hotly debated issue of spouse’s consent to the suretyship contract, respectively. In the second session chaired by Prof. Dr. Teoman Akünal presentations by Prof. Dr. Gülçin Elçin Grassinger, Doç. Dr. Burak Özen and Prof. Dr. Nami Barlas pertained to defenses of the surety, joint suretyship and the termination of the suretyship, respectively.
